About the programme

How can artificial intelligence support the conservation and stewardship of digital and media art and what does responsible adoption look like in practice?

Join us for a public Online Café bringing together experts from galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAM), adjacent fields and European research projects to explore these questions.

Through three panels featuring 10 minute presentations and open discussions, we will explore what media art conservation can learn from current research, practical experience and emerging approaches. Topics include responsible AI implementation, ethical and legal considerations, bias, AI-assisted documentation and digital twins. The event welcomes conservators, artists, researchers, cultural heritage professionals, students and anyone interested in the intersection of AI, art and conservation. You do not need to be an EMBARK member to attend.

This Online Café is organised by Sophie Bunz, Jina Chang, Dr. Sandra Alvaro Sanchez and Dr. Yael Eylat Van Essen as part of Working Group 3 of EMBARK (European Media and Born-digital Art Conservation and Knowledge Network).

EMBARK is a pan-European network for the conservation of media & born-digital art.

Since the 1960s, artists in Europe have made art from the technology of their time: film, video, sound, slides, software and networked environments. We connect the researchers, conservators, curators, archivists, artists and technologists working to keep that art alive.

A network of 187 specialists across 35 countries: conservators, curators, researchers, artists and technologists, pooling the expertise these fragile works depend on.

Abstract: Video games are among the main entry points to the Metaverse and offer a glimpse of its possible realization, thereby serving as a useful arena for discussing and anticipating policy frameworks. This article analyses three well-known and diverse metaversal games – Fortnite, Minecraft and Guild Wars 2 – at two levels. At the surface, the analysis focuses on the narratives that unfold across interaction while transmitting values and shaping the gamer’s subjectivities in forms that transcend the game arena. At a more infrastructural level, we analyse the terms of service, which coalesce from the companies’ histories and their efforts to balance economic profit and fair participation. This analysis aims to explore a series of issues contemplated in the EU Declaration of Digital Rights and Principles and identified in the previous review of grey literature produced by governmental or well-established non-governmental institutions. From a humanities perspective on Metaverse policy, this article considers metaversal games as potential participatory spaces for collectively proposing a more ethical and diverse Metaverse.

El fluir posdigital: entre la génesis artística, la mirada y la huella

El concepto de “fluir posdigital” remite a la manera en que la creación artística, la percepción y la interacción con el mundo se producen en un entorno en el que lo digital ya no es un añadido, sino una capa integrada y natural de nuestra experiencia cotidiana.

Este V Simposio examina el arte digital en su dimensión histórica y sociocultural, proponiendo una visión crítica del canon y resaltando prácticas marginalizadas. Explora la tensión entre la fragilidad tecnológica y la necesidad de construir memorias y archivos sostenibles. Asimismo, analiza el papel de la inteligencia artificial en la redefinición de la autoría, la agencia y la identidad estética, fomentando el diálogo entre distintos agentes del ecosistema artístico y plantea estrategias de preservación y mediación adaptadas a la naturaleza cambiante de los medios digitales.

El simposio contará con la participación de artistas, CezarMocan, Lukas Truniger, Philippe Boisnard y María Cuevas, así como comisarios y profesionales de la gestión cultural entre ellos Semíramis González (La Laboral), Dragan Espenschied (Rizhome), Vicente Matallana (New Art Foundation), Olga Sevillano Pintado (MNCARS) y Pedro Sánchez Blanco (Junta de Andalucía).

El simposio aborda el concepto de flujo posdigital como un marco en el que lo digital se encuentra plenamente imbricado en la experiencia artística y social. Sin embargo, lo anteriormente manifestado no se cumple de forma plena ni homogénea en el campo artístico, donde el arte digital ocupa un lugar aún inestable, periférico y en proceso de legitimación institucional. Este primer bloque propone una lectura crítica del arte digital, atendiendo a sus genealogías y a su condición tecnológica inestable, así como a las razones que explican su exclusión o inclusión parcial en el canon artístico establecido.

Sandra Álvaro participa en el panel “Historia ausente: genealogías invisibles del arte digital” con la presentación: Reensamblar el arte de los medios: hacia ecologías narrativas complejas.

El arte de los Nuevos Medios trabaja con tecnologías que han desbordado su funcionalidad hasta devenir en existenciales. Internet, la ubiquidad informática o la inteligencia artificial son ensamblados tecnológicos que no solo se han infiltrado en la vida cotidiana modificando la percepción y agencia de humanos y no-humanos, sino que se están convirtiendo en agentes transformadores y coparticipantes activos en la evolución de las civilizaciones. El arte de los nuevos medios ha evolucionado paralelamente a estas tecnologías existenciales, formando entramados complejos e interactivos en los que se ponen en juego múltiples medios, saberes y procedimientos, lo que hace posible experimentar las transformaciones de un entorno que, a su vez, se descubre como complejo. Sin embargo, y a pesar de su función en el desvelamiento crítico y la disrupción de este entorno para la abertura de otros mundos posibles, este arte ha sido escasamente reconocido y raramente integrado en las instituciones culturales.

En su condición de ensamblado complejo, el arte de los medios se desarrolla a través de extensas líneas temporales y conexiones múltiples, que lo unen al desarrollo de los medios computacionales y a nuevos paradigmas epistemológicos, pero también a las reclamaciones de la posvanguardia y su incorporación de la otredad. Sujeto a la rápida evolución de las tecnologías y su obsolescencia, este arte ha conocido una evolución rápida y múltiple que ha desbordado la tradición de dirección única de la historia del arte y sus categorías, saliendo de los circuitos culturales y sus templos para producirse y exhibirse en entornos múltiples y híbridos, que van desde los laboratorios tecnológicos hasta la esfera pública, física o virtual. Esta naturaleza múltiple y relacional forma una densa ecología que requiere narrativas igualmente rizomáticas capaces de atravesar y activar los archivos.

Resumen

La expansión de las ciudades es otro de los factores que han dado lugar al desdevenir que denominamos Antropoceno. En el avance de la urbs la relación entre ciudadano, tecnología y naturaleza se ha articulado de diversos modos, desde considerar la naturaleza como modelo para el diseño racional del espacio habitado, en los primeros pensadores de la planificación urbana, al descubrimiento de la capacidad generativa de la diversidad en los años 70s y hasta la actual propuesta de una ciudad para la convivencia interespecífica. En todas estas propuestas el arte ha experimentado y contribuido a dar forma a estas relaciones.

Resumen: La Estética Ecológica se refiere a un grupo creciente de proyectos artísticos realizados a partir del año 2000 que hacen frente a la, cada vez más acuciante, crisis climática y ecológica. Estos proyectos se caracterizan por reunir el arte y la tecnología, la ciencia y las humanidades en instalaciones complejas en las que se combinan procesos, medios y saberes a través de diversos campos de conocimiento, desde la biología y la computación a la antropología y la estética. Este proceder no solo responde a la adhesión a prácticas artísticas iniciadas en la postmodernidad y que se alejaron de la representación en favor de un encuentro con la realidad, sino que se hacen eco de un cambio de paradigma, propagado en los escritos de autores de campos tan diversos como la filosofía, los estudios de la ciencia
y de género, la geología, la etología, la antropología o la ciencia ficción. Donna Haraway, Bruno Latour, Anna Tsing, Vinciane Despret, Ursula K.LeGuin, entre otras, se constituyen en referencias habituales de los artistas que elaboran este campo. Estos autores nos proponen un nuevo tipo de relación con el entorno, si el Antropoceno manifiesta la capacidad del ser humano para administrar y modificar su entorno prolongando la división entre naturaleza y cultura, la reciente adopción de la hipótesis Gaia propuesta por Lovelock-Margulis en 1974, nos sitúa ante un paisaje posthumano, este no percibido como entorno o recurso sino como todo aquello con lo que estamos íntimamente complicados en nuestro devenir.

Art, data models and the complex city

Summary: The Anthropocene is not only the proposal of a new geological era characterised by ecological and geopolitical upheavals, but it is also linked to epistemological and ontological changes that have affected not only the aesthesis – the way we perceive our environment -but also the aesthetics, bringing up new values and procedures that affect the way we produce knowledge and our moral attitudes.
Linked to these changes is a new vision of the world that evolved through new sociotechnical systems. From the first image of the Earth globe taken by the astronauts of the Apollo Mission to the modelling of climate change, the Earth has appeared as a complexity of interlinked systems working at different scales. Since Global Systems can not be studied by experimental methods, and there are no data without models, the knowledge of our environment is the product of the evolution of sensing devices and data models. In other words, borrowed from K. Hayles, our knowledge is produced inside assemblages of technical and biological entities.
Cities are part of these global systems, considered the privileged human habitat and the product of human interactions and culture. At the dawn of this century, the availability of GPS systems and the spread of social networks allowed city planners to consider human beings as sensors producing real-time data. In the hands of artists, these data produced the maps of a lived city in opposition to a functional city planned around the centres of power. In his turn, in the hands of city planners, data models were applied to map the habitability of cities and improve their infrastructures. Despite the productivity of this approach, nowadays new questions arise. Lefebvre described urbanisation as a globalising phenomenon, already in the seventies of the previous century. However, he also pointed to the local specificity of the urbs, determined by its geography, climate and history, its study being a multidisciplinary task concerning social, scientific and humanistic disciplines and in which the progression moment, the proposal of what the urbs can be and its planning, must be preceded by a regressive moment, the description of what it is and the analysis of how it has become. Furthermore, new proposals for a more-than-human city are emerging, which consider habitability as more than a human question: sustainability, air quality, availability of fresh water and food, or the enjoyment of inspiring landscapes being the product of multispecies conviviality. These considerations aim to bring new perspectives to the study of the city and the usage of other data sources and models.
The multiplication of sensing devices and initiatives as open data science has made massive quantities of historical and present information affordable in multiple formats like images, historical blueprints and maps, narrative accounts, ecological inventories, and physical and chemical measurements. In front of the mentioned new standpoints for the study of the urbs and the available information raises questions: Which data models can we use to convey knowledge from this possible archive? Under what conditions does this information become actionable data? What problems arise in the application of these models?
Artists use speculatively supervised and unsupervised Machine Learning Models to make imperceptible phenomena experienceable and anticipate possible futures. My proposal for this roundtable is to see some of these artistic projects to ignite a discussion about the application of these models to the study of the urban.

Supplementary Workshop: AI as an archival tool

The ‘Intelligent Age’ proclamated by Klauss Schwap (WEF) considers AI a multipurpose technology comparable to electricity. A set of technologies fueling a societal revolution which can elevate humanity or fracture it. Framed with Hype and speculation, AI is a technological proposal but also a cultural phenomenon ignited in science fiction at the same time, considered able to boost the growth of giant communication corporations while menacing to kill us all. Beyond all this verbose, generative AI based on deep learning has proved to be a powerful resource in various fields, empowering industry and agriculture, making cities smarter and more sustainable, accelerating diagnosis and drug testing, and even allowing personalised treatments. It is also an opportunity to foster preservation and access to culture, especially when dealing with cultural objects digitally native or vastly documented in digital formats.

Despite Media Art participation in the development and spread of the ‘intelligent age’, Media Art research and acknowledgement are still marginal in universities, museums and archives, being largely under-resourced in core cultural institutions (Liverpool Declaration). The goal of this workshop is to discuss the capabilities of now available intelligent technologies and tools to facilitate New Media Art preservation, access and visibility, empower networked collaboration and data sharing and knowledge transfer between artists, institutions and researchers internationally, increase Media Art visibility on the web and provide resources and inspiration for curators, researchers and educators helping to disseminate and preserve the heritage of Media Art.
