Sandra Álvaro is Ph.D. in Philosophy for the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB). Her thesis investigates the artistic appropriation of the “space of the embodied Virtuality”, a concept she proposes to denominate the technical assemblage that is shaping our culture and contemporary spaces of dwelling. With this aim, she focuses on the material conditions and social processes related to innovations such the Internet of Things, data visualization and digital fabrication. She frames on its potential use towards a collective production of urban space

During her research, she has been visiting researcher at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics from the UCLA University and invited artist/researcher at the laboratory Paragraphe/CITU of the Université Paris8. Between 2014-2015, she was working with the Roy Ascott Studio seminal team as a lecturer and program contributor for the BA in Art and Technology DeTao/SIVA join-program (Shangai, China). She has published in refereed journals, as Artnodes and Technoetic Art Journal and presented at international conferences: CAC 5 2016, (Paris, France), ISEA 2015 (Vancouver, Canada), Re-new 2013 (Copenhagen) and the CR13 International Research Conference in the series of Consciousness Reframed: Art and Consciousness in the post-biological era (Cairo), among others. She is also a habitual contributor to the blog of the research laboratory of the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), focusing on digital culture and the new cultural sphere.

Sandra Álvaro has companioned her theoretical and academic work with artistic production. As an artist, she has explored the encounter between virtual and urban space and has developed projects exhibited in art centres and Festivals as MOCA (Taipei), MADATAC Festival (Madrid), the Caixa Forum Barcelona and Madrid, Casal Solleric (Palma de Mallorca) or the Museum of Modern Art of Toluca (Mexico)
