“Art and Locative Media: interaction on the hybrid space of the city.”

Abstract:
The term Locative Media was first proposed by Karlis Kalnins in 2001 to designate an artistic test category for grouping the products and process generated in the Locative Media Lab. These Processes were focused on the uses and applications of that we call the new Geographical Panoptic.
This Panoptic was produced by the new technologies promoted during the spatial race. It consists on a global and abstract vision of the world that has reduced every corner of the terrestrial globe to a localizable magnitude, expressible as a coordinate.
This gives place to a fully know world affordable for anybody with a GPS. This world reduced to data has produced a hybrid space were the virtual space of data has become a continuum of the physical word were daily life takes place.
The art of Locative Media is a new way of interactive art that has been developed on the intersection of the data and the physical space. It places the interaction out of the flat screen for developing it in the entire urban space. It uses all the devices of surveillance and control of this Panoptic in a critical and poetical way. A subversive and tergiversated use that promotes a resignification of this space to make the huge semantic content that characterises the lived space come into the abstract representation.

Abstract:
El término Locative Media fue acuñado en el año 2001 por Karlis Kalnins como categoría artística para designar los productos y procesos que se generaban en el Locative Media Lab. Procesos dirigidos a investigar los usos y aplicaciones de lo que aquí denominaremos el nuevo Panóptico Geográfico.
Este Panóptico, generado a partir de las nuevas tecnologías promovidas por la Carrera Espacial, consiste en una visión global y abstracta del mundo que ha reducido hasta el último rincón del planeta a una magnitud mensurable, localizable y expresable en coordenadas. Lo que ha dado lugar a un mundo enteramente conocido y a la mano de cualquiera que disponga de un dispositivo GPS. Este mundo reducido a datos y puesto a la mano ha producido un espacio hibrido en que el espacio virtual compuesto por estos datos se ha extendido como una continuación del mundo físico en que se desarrolla la vida cotidiana.
El arte de los Medios Locativos es una nueva forma de arte interactivo que se sitúa en la intersección entre estos dos espacios. Haciendo salir la interacción de la superficie plana de la pantalla para proponerla y desarrollarla en todo el espacio urbano. Planteándose la posibilidad de un uso crítico y poetizante de los dispositivos de vigilancia y control que acarrea todo este aparatage panóptico. Un uso subversivo y tergiversado del Panóptico que promueve la resignificación de este espacio interpretado haciendo entrar en la representación abstracta del espacio el basto contenido semántico que aporta el espacio vivido.
